Welcome to Catholic Schoolhouse in Vermont!

Our registration for the 2020-21 School Year is now closed but we are accepting registrations for virtual homeschool support. Contact Patty to see how BVT Catholic Schoolhouse can support your homeschool virtually this year with community support from other Vermont Catholic Homeschoolers.

Burlington VT Catholic Schoolhouse is a supplemental program that meets weekly in  St. Albans, VT.   We seek to help homeschool families in Northwest Vermont enrich their educational experience.  Our flexible approach to learning is inspired by classical elements, and presented in a structured environment.

We will provide the following programs for the 2020-21 School year: Dialectic (7th-9th grade), Grammar (K-6th grade)Pre-grammar (ages 3-4), and an optional Nursery (Infant-2 years). We are also exploring the possibility of offering a Rhetoric program (10th-12th grades) next year. The whole family can have a place at Catholic Schoolhouse!

Our program meets once per week for a total of 24 weeks from September to May with one week off per month and longer breaks around Thanksgiving, Advent/Christmas, and Holy Week/Easter Week. Our year is divided  into 6 week quarters.

The Tour Guide includes all 24 weeks of memory work

Catholic Schoolhouse students study the same topics at all ages creating family unity.   The Tour Guide presents weekly memory work in 10 areas: history timeline, geography, history, religion, music, art, science, math, language arts, and Latin.

Science Bridge building Competition

In our weekly chapter meeting, in addition to the memory work class time, the grammar students have a science lab, an art class and opportunities to give presentations to a friendly audience.

Having all scholars use the Tour Guideā€™s content facilitates family cohesiveness and simplifies lessons for home educators.  At the dinner table, an 8th grader, 5th grader, and 2nd grader can all talk about physics, history, and art. The 8th grader will be able to go more in-depth into subjects than the younger siblings, but all children will be able to talk about the interesting things they are learning.

Our dialectic scholars have alternate weeks of a 1-hour science experiment and a 1-hour art class. Dialectic scholars read, have Socratic style discussions, and write about one book per quarter.  They also learn to write papers in many different genres using the IEW program.

Scholars learn about 5 key events in history each week. Each card has a picture representing an event, and the back has several paragraphs for deeper learning for older scholars.

In addition to a weekly co-op, we have quarterly “Parents’ Night Out” and quarterly field trips. The field trips are chosen to complement content in the Tour Guide for that quarter.
